Scent

Today’s word is scent. I have a roast cooking in the crock pot. That is all I smell now. Soon I’m going to add potatoes and carrots. Yum, can’t wait to eat it!

When I was young, I would be very upset when I smelled white beans and ham cooking as I entered the house. Mom always made cornbread with it, so I would pick out the ham and eat it with the cornbread.

She told me she cooked a ham for Easter last weekend. I’m wondering if beans and cornbread are on her menu this week. It’s one of my dad’s favorite dishes.

It’s funny how one word can bring back memories.

I found a recipe in case your craving white beans and ham. Just click on the link.

Now did I make you hungry?

  1. LOL! I have to really be hungry for beans and ham in order to eat it and then I prefer the navy bean and ham soup over northern beans. And yes, we do cornbread with ours as well. Unfortunately, Kroger’s no longer carries the Marie Calendar original cornbread mix. That was the BEST!!!

  2. Reading your blog today brought back sooooo many memories regarding “scent”. The smell of my moms perfume (Charlie & Chanel 5), I use to love snuggling up to her as a child burying my face in her neck just bcuz she always smelled so good. Or the Sunday dinner meal when she made pork roast with potatoes & carrots and that garlic smell filled our house. My mouth would water just waiting to sit down for dinner. The musty smell of my grandparents old house up in Epworth, IA, I hated that smell and it gave me the creeps but at the same time it gave me comfort bcuz I loved going up there to see them if that makes sense. The scent of my babies (now 27 & 20) when I would give them a bath and get them in a clean onesie. Oh my Lord I loved that smell. It’s funny how “scents” bring back either good memories or perhaps even sad ones, but how they tie into our lives and maybe even shape or mold us in some fashion. After reading this I sat at my kitchen table after eating dinner and as a small tear escaped my eye thinking of my beloved mother (now with the Lord), I could have sworn I could have smelled her Charlie perfume 😊. Keep the blogs coming Tracey, u really have a gift.
